Alright. We're about to dive into the message. But before we do, let's pray together. *Father*, I thank you for who you are. Lord, thank you that you're here.
You're here with me as I'm speaking this, but not only that, your presence, whether people recognize it or not, is in the room with them, wherever they are. Lord God, whether they're sitting on their couch, they're sitting at a Starbucks, or at a coffee shop, they're with their family, they're in their bedroom, wherever they are, presence is there. And Father, I pray in this moment, they become aware. They're still and know that you are God, you are good, you love them, and you're in the room, and you want to lead them and guide them and equip them to move forward in you. Father, I ask that the result of this message would be people equipped for ministry in their daily lives.
Lord, I pray that it's you speaking through me. And, because if it's you, Lord, it will impact people for eternity. So just all distractions, I just pray they they they leave and and people sit on the edge of their seat, metaphorically, listening to what you have to say. In Jesus name, amen and amen. Well, once again, good morning.
My name is David John Phillips, and I have the honor of being the pastor here. And, if you are checking this out for the first time, thank you for plugging in, and I guarantee you're gonna walk away encouraged, and just equipped with a deeper understanding of God, and how much he loves you. So today, we are finishing. We're kinda wrapping up. It's the final part of the gifted series, part 8.
And it's my prayer that this series in its totality will have given you an understanding of God, a deeper understanding of God, a deeper understanding of the gifts of God, including the the gifts from the Father, the gifts from Christ, and and really, we spent a lot of time on the gifts from the Holy Spirit**. And my prayer is that it will have equipped you to begin to put these things into use in your daily lives. See, remember, according to scripture, and we've talked about this in this series, if you are a believer, if you're born again, if you know Jesus, you have a relationship with him, then your purpose, wherever you are, at your job, at home, your purpose is ministry. And we've shown that my role as a leader of the church is to Ephesians-4:12 you, which says to equip you for the "works of ministry". And the spiritual gifts are the manifestation of his grace to us and his grace through us.
It's a manifestation of his undeserved favor to us and his undeserved favor through us to the world around us. To help you be a more or be more effective at ministering his goodness in your daily life. So today, I'm gonna go through some spiritual gifts that we haven't covered, and and we're gonna take some time with each 1 to to show practically where it's used in scripture, but then also give a short testimony of of how it was used in my daily life. And hopefully, through the 2 of those, you'll take away a principle that will help you to begin to step out and *supernaturally love the people around you with the love of God* through you. Remember, *1 Corinthians-12:7* says this, now to each 1, the manifestation of the spirit is given for the "common good".
So the manifestation of the Holy Spirit, the gifts of the spirit, they're given to show it's for for the goodness. It's to show God's goodness. Every good and perfect gift, Bible says, comes down from the father of heavenly lights. So it's once again, his goodness to us and his goodness through us to reveal his goodness to those around us. Not just that, Galatians-5:6 b, it's that last sentence of theirs of that verse says, the only thing and I want you to catch this.
It says, the only thing that counts is *faith* expressing itself through *love*. And with the gift of the Holy Spirit**, you cannot and you will not walk in or step out in experience the gifts of the Holy Spirit without faith. You you it's just not possible. Why? Because the gifts of the Holy Spirit or the manifestations of the Holy Spirit are supernatural.
And we're used to walking in the natural, and it doesn't take faith to walk in what we're used to, the natural. But it does take faith to walk in the supernatural, or to let his supernatural goodness flow through you. Why? Because faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. So you have to hear his voice.
And what is faith? It's hearing his voice and then acting on it, putting it into practice in your life. So it's hearing his supernatural voice and then taking a "step of faith", but it's uncomfortable because you're used to walking the natural. So taking a step of faith based on what he said, and then supernaturally, his power flows through you and through that step of faith, and it becomes reality around you and impacts others supernaturally. And that's awesome.
But remember, the only thing that counts is faith express expressing itself through love. So faith without love doesn't count for anything. So therefore, miracles, healing, tongues, interpretation of tongues, prophecy, words of knowledge, words of wisdom, discernment, having the faith to step out of your comfort zone and walk in these things, but not having love makes all of these things count for nothing. Like, you can get to the place hear me now. You can get to the place where you're speaking in tongues, you're praying for the sick, you're giving people words of wisdom and words of knowledge, and and and you're feeling good, and it's more about you feeling good and more about your spiritual ego than it is about loving people and letting the love of God flow through you and impact people.
Letting the love of Jesus, letting letting Jesus impact their hearts supernaturally through those things. It's more about you than it is about that happening in you getting to be a part of that. And so then, it becomes this performance based mindset and absolutely counts for nothing because the only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love, and love is selfless. Love is is is not about us. It's about us laying down our comfort.
It's about laying down our performance. It's about laying so that we can impact others. So what is the heart then? The heart for the spiritual gifts, which is the goodness of God through us. Right?
For the common good. The heart is this. When you walk into a room, when you walk into, you know, maybe it's your home with your family, or you go into this you're having dinner with your kids, or or when you walk into a restaurant, or you're about to meet with someone, or you're about to whatever it is, you know, Walmart, wherever you are in your life, the heart of the spiritual gift is this. Those spiritual gifts are is this. It's Father, would you show me how you want to love this person in this moment?
I'm willing to do whatever you ask. That's it. That's the heart. *Father, would you show me how you want to love* this person in this moment? I'm willing to do whatever you ask.
Show me and I'll do it. And so that leads us into the first gift I want to talk about today and and remember this is equipping you for the works of ministry. Okay? Because the spiritual gifts *supernaturally* open up their heart to be able to receive *Jesus* or to be able to to receive a seed of the gospel. So I'll start with a story.
I walked into and this is a true story. This happened. This literally happened. I walked into a fast food restaurant, had a couple of buddies with me. And when I walk in, I it was I I I saw the the girl that I was about to go and order from.
She was behind the cash register. And I just said, father, how do you want to love this girl in this moment? I said that in my heart. Not out loud. I was just praying in my heart.
*Father, how do you want to love* this girl in this moment? And I had the thought cross my mind, art. Now, I don't know if if I saw the word in my mind or or if I I just felt, you know, like artistic all of a sudden that was not normal or or, you know, I saw a paintbrush. I don't remember that. Could have been any 1 of those things.
But I had I had the thought, the word, I think it was the word, crossed my mind, art. And I knew I had just prayed, *God, how do you want to love* this young woman? How do you want to love her in this moment? Show me father. And art came to my mind.
So what did I do? When I got up to order, I I ordered a little bit. I asked her her name, and let's just call her Susie. And so she said her name was Susie. I said, Susie, do you have a passion for art?
Now, what she didn't know and what you don't know, but I'm about to tell you, is my heart was beating like crazy. Why? Because she doesn't know I'm taking a radical step of faith right here. Because I think supernaturally, quite possibly, this thought that crossed my mind was God telling me something about her, so that she could know that God sees her in the moment, sees where she is, and can receive the supernatural love of God. So I'm taking this radical step of faith.
I don't know if this young woman's gonna think that I'm absolutely insane for asking her this question, like, possibly could I mean, you know, all of those thoughts we think. Why would somebody ask that that kind of thing? But in the moment, I have to push all of that aside because it's not about me. It's not about me looking stupid or not looking stupid. It's not about what they think of me.
It's if it's really love, then it's really all about the other person. It's all about God loving them in the moment. And am I willing to get over me to let God love her through me so that she can experience God's love, or do I hold on to me in the moment? So I took this wild leap of faith and she looks at me with this puzzled look in her in her eyes, you know, kinda like, how did you know that I had a passion for art? And so I just go with it because if God showed me that she had a passion for art and this is for the common good, then he probably showed me because he wanted to show her his goodness.
So I began to tell her what I knew And I know some things from scripture that are promises. I told her, well, I know this, Susie. I I I know that God loves you. I know that you're precious to him. He really cares for you.
And that he put that passion for art inside of you. And he he I think he he told me to tell you this in the moment, just to to show you that he sees you where you are. Would you let me pray for you? And she's like, yeah. Yeah.
Okay. And so, you know, because I'm in a fast food restaurant, I'm not gonna take 2 hours and all this. It's gonna be really quick. Like, all of this happened in the span of 90 seconds. Right?
Me ordering everything. So I I just pray. *Father* and and when I pray for somebody like this, you know, I pray I always use the name of Jesus. Because people a lot of people believe in God. The Bible says even demons believe in God.
Right? But I don't know what God they believe in, and I don't even know if they know him. And the only way to know God is the only way to know the father is through the son. The only way to know the father is through Jesus. So I always when I pray for someone, I always use Jesus, or when I'm talking to someone, I always use Jesus.
So I just prayed. Lord God, I thank you that you love Susie. Lord, I thank you that you put this passion for art inside of her. I pray that you cultivate this because you have amazing plans for her. Lord, I pray she's blessed and just grows every single day in how much you love her.
In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen. And so, that was that. Right? She she looked at me.
She exclaimed, thank thank oh my gosh. Thank you. That that was amazing. I said, absolutely. It's just God loving you.
You know? Sometimes, when I have time, I'll say I'll say, do I'll I'll open the conversation. Do you know Jesus? You know? Or or I'll talk about Jesus in that way.
But this particular case, I don't think I had time at, you know, so I went and got my food and there was people behind me, that kind of thing. But here's the thing. *God is a big God and the Holy Spirit*, I just sowed a seed. See, what was that? What gift was that?
That was a word of knowledge. The Bible says in in 1 Corinthians-12, he says, to another, messages of knowledge by meaning the same spirit means of the same spirit. What is a word of knowledge? A *supernatural* I supernaturally knew something about her that she never told me or no 1 else ever told me. Right?
It was straight from God. And what was it? When you have something supernatural like that, it gets people's attention. It opens up their heart to receive the love of God in the moment. That's what the gifts are.
They equip they they they help you with ministry. It opens up a person's heart so they can receive God's love. So there's a first example, and then you you know, I just planted the seed. What's amazing is, like, when I walked away, a lot of times when people minister to people or people try to, you know, show God love, they always ask for something in return. But how amazing is it love is selfless?
How amazing is it just to love someone where they are in that moment? Right? And then walk away, and they realize, maybe as you walk away or maybe 10 minutes later, wait a second, they didn't ask anything from me. They just said that because they love me. Oh my gosh.
And then they experience the love of God in that moment. Like, sometimes with ministering to people, you'll never see the fruit of the seed sown. But that's okay. Obedience is your success. Okay?
So that that was a word of knowledge. An example from scripture, it's in John-4. Because I always wanna give an example from scripture just because it's important. But in John-4, *Jesus* is at the well with the woman at the well. Verse 15, the woman said to him, sir, give me this water so that I don't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.
Verse 16, he told her, Jesus told the woman, go call your husband and come back. Verse 17, I have no husband, she replied. Jesus said to her, you are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had 5 husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have said is quite true.
*Supernatural* knowledge. Right? We have the spirit of Christ who can equip us with those same things. 1 Corinthians-12. A gift.
This is an example of it walked out. Now, verse 19. Sir, the woman said, I can see that you are a prophet. So she immediately realizes something not natural is going on here, and Jesus has her full attention. Now, watch what happens at the end of the story.
It says, verse 25 and 26. *John-4:25 26. The woman said, I know that Messiah called Christ is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us. Then Jesus* declared, I, the 1 speaking to you, am he.
So the word of knowledge happened. It opened up the woman at the well to realize something supernatural is happening, something from God. I'm amazed. I want to lean in. I want to listen and hear.
She's opening up herself to hear. And then, *Jesus* reveals himself. Jesus Jesus says, I am the Messiah. "I am he". So he plants the seed of the gospel in her heart.
And what happens? Next thing you know, her whole town receives Jesus. Her whole town comes out and believes, which is awesome and wonderful. But that's there's a picture of what the *supernatural* or the spiritual gifts do. They open up a person's heart to the gospel, and then you plant, you reveal Jesus in that moment, whether it's through prayer, through speaking to them, through presenting the gospel if you have time, or or if they have time and you have the grace to do so, whatever it is.
So there's a there's a real practical example. I pray that you walk in that or you're willing to walk in that. You know, as many as you, of you that seek it, *God will give it to you. The Bible says, "earnestly desire", ask, and it will be given to you. He's a good father*.
He wants to bless you with the ability to love people in that way. Alright. So let's let's move on. Word of wisdom is another 1 I wanna talk about today. What is wisdom?
We know that wisdom is simply knowledge applied. Right? It's not just knowing how to do something, but it's it's knowing how to put that in practice and doing it. Like, applied. It's that's wisdom.
And it's also "knowing what not to do" and not doing it. That's also wisdom. Right? And the spiritual gift, which we saw in 1 Corinthians-12, It said, to 1, there's a given the *spirit* through the spirit, a message of wisdom. Right?
So the spiritual gift, the message of wisdom, or the word of wisdom is more than just simply natural wisdom, but it's a *supernatural* knowing what to do when you naturally shouldn't, and it takes faith because everything supernatural from God following it takes faith because you're walking outside of the natural. So it takes faith to hear that and then to do it. Right? So I wanna give you an example of a couple of words of wisdom from scripture, and then 1 from my life and and what that looked like. In Acts-16.
Acts-16:6. Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit** from preaching the word in the province of Asia. There's your example of a a word of wisdom. Right? They probably wanted to go.
It kinda implies they wanted to go into Asia to preach the gospel, preach the word of God, but the Holy Spirit** said, uh-uh. I no. Do not do that. What is wisdom? It's also knowing what not to do and not doing it.
Right? So supernaturally, God, the Holy Spirit* communicated to them, the Father by Christ* through the Holy Spirit communicated to them not to go into Asia, a word of wisdom. Do we know why? No. We don't have to always know why.
We trust God even when we don't understand and follow his word because we trust him that he knows what is best. So they didn't go into Asia. It doesn't tell us why. And once again, you don't always have to know why, but you do, by faith, follow the Holy Spirit. Without faith, it is impossible to please God.
So we learning and growing to take steps of faith as led by the Holy Spirit**. Okay. Verse 7, when they came to the board of border of Mycia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the spirit of Jesus, which is the Holy Spirit, he's the spirit of Christ, spirit of Jesus, would not allow them to. So here's another 1, where the Holy Spirit gave them a word of wisdom. No, I don't want you to go they tried, but the Holy Spirit said, no, I don't want you to go in there.
And if he is the Lord of your life, you do what he wants instead of what you want, because you trust him to lead and guide you in what's best. And so with this word of wisdom, they wanted to go, but they said, no, not what I want. I'm going to follow what you are saying. And even if I don't understand why, even if I I think I know what's best, I'm gonna follow what you were saying. So they didn't do what they shouldn't have done, which is also wisdom.
And this is supernatural, supernatural knowledge from the Holy Spirit**. Okay. Verse 9. During that night, Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him. Come over to Macedonia and help us.
After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave from Macedonia concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them. So not only is the word of wisdom knowing what not to do and supernaturally and not doing it, it's also knowing what to do supernaturally and doing it. And God gave them, through a vision, a word of wisdom. A man from Macedonia saying, hey, come to us. Come help us.
Right? And Paul, it wasn't exactly clear, just like the art thing that you saw with the word of knowledge before wasn't exactly clear, but I went with it because I knew it was God by faith. Same thing. It wasn't God saying, you must go to Macedonia, take these steps, and these steps, and these steps. No.
It was clear enough for them to "take a step" of faith. And so he knew where to go. And let me just let me just dove to I mean, kinda make a little detour here. So they followed this word of wisdom, and it's kind of in the same line of of prophecy and prophetic stuff, you know, for those of you that that listen to that message. But they followed this word of wisdom in obedience by faith.
They get to Macedonia, specifically the city of Philippi. And in the city of Philippi, they end up getting flogged, beaten, and thrown into prison. You know, a lot of us, if we step out in faith and something bad happens, we say, oh, that must not have been God. If we don't see success in our life, we say, oh, that must not have been God. I really missed it there.
I really I've done that before. I really failed and give up. But Paul and Silas was it Paul and Silas? Or Paul and his his companions, whoever they were, and I think it was Paul and Silas. In the prison, they didn't give up.
They worshiped God and stood in the midst of the trial. And what happened by them standing in the midst of the trial despite? They didn't say, oh man, we just missed it. No. What happened to them standing on what they knew God had spoken by faith?
As a result of that, the jailer gay and his whole family gave his life to Jesus and a and a church was planted in Philippi. Probably the first church ever in the city of Philippi because of their faith. Now, here's the crazy part. The Holy Spirit knew that they were gonna be flogged and persecuted in the city of Philippi, and still told them supernaturally to go there. Because that had to happen for the jailer to see how they responded by hope, through the persecution, to be affected by the gospel.
Are you willing to follow him? Even if it gets harder? When you say yes? Are you willing to stand even if he supernaturally gives you a word of wisdom on what to do? And you say yes, and life gets tougher?
Are you willing to know that he's good? And that your life is a sacrifice to expand his kingdom? And that's good? And that's amazing and worth it and fulfilling? Are you willing?
And, I wanna be. Lord, whatever it whatever it means. Even if it means I have to die for the gospel. Even if it means you say this. My wife may not like that right now.
She's listening to me. But it's it's it's really her heart too. I know it is. Even if, father, I wanna follow you because I, my heart and my home is not here. My heart and my home is a heavenly home and and I consider it worth everything To just know your will and say yes.
That's that's the heart of a disciple. And, you are disciples. So, whether you know it or not, if you've received Jesus, that's your heart. Believe it and receive it. And, let's walk in it together.
Okay? So there's your few words of wisdom from scripture. Personally, in my life, this is the example, I guess, that that came to mind when I was writing this message. I I was getting this about 7 years ago, I was getting my masters in masters of arts in Christian leadership. And I was at a seminary, and seminary degrees are tough.
Like, they're they're nothing to be, you know, sneezed at. I they had 60 hours. Right? A normal masters is 30 hours. So I was crazy busy in this time.
And full time doing that, full time working at a church, you know, 9 to 5, and then Sundays, and had a little baby and a wife. And and I'm I'm doing all this, and I have this desire, this deep feeling and knowing that I needed to take extra classes, specifically Greek, and do the whole Greek track, is 1 of the some of the hardest stuff you can do in your masters in seminary. And, logically, it just didn't sound seemed kinda crazy. Why would I do that in the midst of everything I'm going through? But, I had this supernatural, like, I knew this desire was from God.
And so I had the decision, and it was it was wisdom. It was knowing what to do. Knowing the next step. And I I I wouldn't didn't really know it was a word of wisdom until later I saw the result of it. But I just had to take a step of faith.
And so I took a step of faith. I started taking those classes. God supernaturally gave me the grace, and he always does. If he gives you a word from him, he's gonna equip you and empower you to do it. It might be hard.
It might be testing. It might develop some character. You might feel some suffering as you learn discipline in the moment, which is good. He's a good father, but it's worth it. So over the next couple of years, I complete the Greek track and graduate, you know, on time with my masters.
And right as I'm at the end, when I'm getting ready to graduate, God puts the the desire in my heart to get my doctorate. Well, I wouldn't if I wouldn't have taken the extra classes, if I wouldn't have specifically taken the Greek track, because you have to have at least 1 language, and a MDiv, a master's of divinity equivalency to get your doctorate, I wouldn't have been able to follow his next step for my life. So he gave and I would have to go back and repeat some stuff, and it would have taken longer. So he gave me a supernatural word of wisdom. I followed it by faith, and it equipped me to be able to take the next steps that he's called me to do.
And and now, I'm excited because our next series, not next Sunday, but the the following Sunday, we're starting a series based on what I'm writing for my final project, my doctorate. Global how a local church becomes a globally connected church, which I'm so stoked about. But, I wouldn't have been able to do it if I wouldn't have heard his voice and followed it by faith. I don't say that to you to brag on what I've done or anything. I say that to you so that you can see practically how a word of wisdom works.
Now, can you get a word of wisdom for someone else? Absolutely. But I would first get used to following the words of wisdom for your own life. You know? And then also realize that it's all about loving the other person.
Because if you get a word of wisdom for someone else and and it's not it's not by faith through love, then it's gonna be more about you than it is about them and maybe trying to control them to do what you want, and that's not okay. So a word of wisdom for someone is always it's always loving them, and and it will always God will always confirm it. Right? You won't be the sole person. God will always confirm it.
It will be something God has already been showing them or will in the next few days or next few weeks or whatever time, we'll we'll confirm it through other people or other circumstances, and it'll be like, oh, man, that was God. But it's never controlling. It's never just trying to make people do what we want. No. It's all by faith through love.
So I just as a word of caution, first, get used to hearing his voice for yourself and get get used to hear it as for the word of wisdom specifically. Get used to to walking in in his words of wisdom for you and watching that walk out in your life, and let the overflow of that be for other people. Okay? So there are other gifts of the Holy Spirit** that we haven't talked about. The Holy Spirit can manifest himself in any way that he wants.
How do you walk in those things practically? Through relationship, through learning to hear his voice. In *1 Corinthians-14:1*, it says, and I started this whole series with this. It says, follow the way of love and eagerly desire the gifts of the spirit, especially prophecy. So it's all through the way of love.
But for all of us, you are to eagerly desire the gifts of the Spirit, not be scared of them, because you saw it practiced by faith, but not through love in the past, which counted for nothing, and you thought it was weird, and and it left some nasty taste in your mouth instead of revealing Jesus. Or maybe you saw it practiced right, but because of your lack of faith, were scared of it, and you ran from it. Either way, let's fall forward, and let's eat, by love, eagerly desire the gifts of the spirit so that we can supernaturally impact the world around us and be equipped more effectively to minister his goodness in our daily lives. And, this is a learning process. And, how do you learn this?
Real practically, *Romans-12* and verse 2. How do you do this? And I quote this all the time. It says, do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. You're not going to walk in these things by conforming to the pattern of this world because your mind is not gonna be on spiritual things.
It's gonna be on earthly things. It's gonna be more focused on what you can get or how you can, you know, get out of this or get out of that or or make this happen for yourself. But if you're transformed by the renewing of your mind to heavenly things, to the father's love, now you're gonna think about yourself less and love others more. Right? It says, then, as you're transform how do you trans how are you transformed by the renewing of your mind?
By the washing of the water of the word, which is in Ephesians-5. By by by getting in his word, getting to know the principles of who he is, and how he speaks to you in your daily life. And as you know how he speaks, and as you get to know what his word says, and what his promises are not only for you, but for others. Right? Because if they're for you, then they're for others.
They just have to believe them and receive Right? It says, then after you're transformed by the renewing of your mind or as you're being transformed, it says, then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is, his "good, pleasing, and perfect will". And that's what I was doing in the first story. The word of knowledge about art for the young woman at the cash register. I was testing and approving.
Say, what would have happened if I would have got it wrong? What if what would have happened if she would have said, nah. I've never heard about art before. I mean, I I don't have a passion for art. That's that's not me.
As a matter of fact, last yesterday, I was in Walmart. Like, yesterday, I was in Walmart, and I the same thing happened. I asked this this teenager, you know, if he had a passion for basketball. And he said, nah. He said, actually, I'm a I'm a dancer.
And and it opened up a conversation, and I was still able to pray for him and encourage him, but it wasn't what I thought. So I tested and approved, wait, oh, that wasn't necessarily God's heart, but I still got to encourage him with God's love, which is cool. And I learned just a little bit more about what's from God and what's from my own imagination. And I fall forward, I don't get all, oh my gosh, missed it. I'm never doing that again.
It ain't about you. It's about loving people, and about you growing in your capacity to "love people". So get over you, so that you can love others, not with your natural love, but with God's supernatural love. Amen? God really loves you.
Let's we're about to go into worship. And wherever you are, like, you as you hear me talking about God's love and God loving people, he really loves you right where you are. And and he wants you to experience a relationship with him. He wants you to to to experience what that is. And if you don't know Jesus but you want to know Jesus, would you message us?
Whether you're watching on YouTube, watching on Facebook, like actually take a step. Like actually take a step towards Jesus. Say, hey, you know what? I'm gonna "message them". We will message you back and lead you into a relationship with Jesus.
Like, he's amazing and wonderful. For the rest of you, if you've already known Jesus and this is challenging for you to walk in his love, great. As we sing these next songs, why don't you pray and just ask God to give you that kind of heart for people, just to love people in amazing ways, supernaturally. Okay?
