You are designed to reflect God's glory, but it requires the right spiritual environment to grow. Invite the Holy Spirit to illuminate your mind today and step forward in faith to receive His power.
What is up, Real Church? Excited for today's podcast. My name is David John Phillips. I have the honor of being the pastor here at Real Church,
and we are in part 2 of a series titled the *glory* of living. Today, we're gonna be talking about the
environment of glory. "Buckle up and get ready".
I know this is going
to encourage you and to help you understand more deeply your purpose in God's plan. God bless.
The title of today is the environment of glory. Would you guys say that with me aloud? The environment of glory. I have you say it for a reason. Because, you know, part of my gifting as a teacher, as a teacher, When you see something, you hear something, and you say something, you're more likely to remember something.
And, if I want you to remember this, so that you can live forever in the environment of glory. Amen? Also, a little bit of warning. Today may be a little bit deeper in some areas than we normally go. Okay?
That being said, spiritual realities are understood only by the Holy Spirit. That's *1 Corinthians-2*. Okay? And so, my prayer and and my hope is that, hey, you you are listening, but don't just take my word for it. Go back in Scripture, study it, be what Paul says is berean about it.
Meaning, go back and look up the Scriptures and ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes and to see. And if if you hear something that doesn't make sense or he what go back and listen to it again. Study and put it into practice in your life. God loves you and he cares for you. Okay?
And he wants you to understand everything. Right? He illuminates it by His Spirit. It's very important. Maybe that's just a fear of mine.
Maybe this is just like, you know, you guys are gonna gonna get this from from the get go, and I shouldn't even said that because you're just you're just ready and and rolling. Amen? So, Amen. That's my prayer. So so, Father, I just pray you open up our eyes to hear and to see you clearly.
So, the environment of glory. We talked about glory last week. Glory is God putting on display his character and his nature. Who he is, glory is is God putting who he is and what he does on display for all to see. Everything exists, every piece of creation exists in order to manifest the glory of God.
We talked about last week the painting. Right? An artist, a great artist, when he paints a painting on a piece of canvas and he says, I'm done, he puts it on display for all to see. People see the painting and they see aspects of the character in nature and attributes of the artist. Amen?
*Creation* is God's artwork, and he's the artist. And, you are his masterpiece created in his image to represent him, to be a representation of God. And, the Bible says created in his likeness. We talked about that last week. And, created created to be like God.
Not created to be God. Don't call me a heretic yet. But, *Ephesians-4* verses 22 through 24, and this is important. That's why I'm I'm I'm kind of reviewing this here. *Ephesians-4:22-24*.
You were taught with regard to your former way of life to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires. Don't believe me unless I show you in Scripture. But, if I show you in Scripture, then change your beliefs. Amen. Amen.
Alright. To be made new in the attitude of your mind and to put on the new self, born again, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. I told you. Yeah? Yeah.
Yeah. You follow me so far? Great. Alright. Wonderful.
Okay. So, you are created to represent God in his fullness. Now, what does it take in in representing God in his fullness, representing his glory, representing who he is and what he does to the world, what does it take for glory to be revealed? Well, we talked about it last week. Remember this picture?
That 1. It's coming. He's he's searching for it. He's awesome. The bird.
Boom. You guys remember that? That not glorious. Stop it. People say, oh, that is so cute.
That's only cute because you know what's gonna become. It is not glorious. That is scary. That's glorious. Everything that that ugly thing needs in order to become this, the nature it needs in order to become this beautiful thing is already placed inside of it.
God placed it in there at conception. When it was ugly. When it was ugly. And, it needs 3 things in order to become this. Right?
We talked about this last week. It needs the right environment. Yep. It re it needs nourishment, and it needs time for growth. And, without that, it will die without representing the full glory that God put inside of it.
But, with the proper environment, with proper nourishment, and time for growth, it will grow to display its full glory. Amen? And, by displaying its full glory, it will be glorifying God. The glory of a bird is to fly. It's natural for a bird to fly, therefore, is its glory.
And, a bird needs the right environment in order to fly. The bird needs needs a sky. It needs open air in order to do that. You take a bird out of the proper environment and put it in a cage, then you are preventing it, you are restricting it from being able to display the glory that God put inside of it. Yeah.
It's still a bird. It's just in the wrong environment. Yeah? Yeah. The *glory* of a fish is to swim because it naturally swims.
It has the nature to swim. God put it there. So, you put a fish in its proper environment, and it will do what it was created to do, and by doing that, give God glory. We have aquariums where people buy, spends thousands and thousands of dollars to have an aquarium just to look at fish and go, wow. At fish in their glory, giving God glory and it's awesome.
Yeah? You take a fish out of its environment and put it on land, it's in the wrong environment, it will try to move in the same way that it tries to move underwater. But, being in the wrong environment, it will flop around and not look glorious. Right? A fish also has gills.
Those gills are specifically designed to pull oxygen out of its proper environment in order to give it nourishment. A fish also gets its food from its proper environment. Right? You take a fish out of water and put it in the wrong environment on land, it is malnourished, it dries up, and it dies. Because water is the proper environment for a fish to display its full glory.
The proper environment for man to display the glory that God put inside of him, mankind, man and woman, is his presence. God's presence is the proper environment. I'll show you. Let's go to Genesis-2:7-8. Says, then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
Now, the Lord God had planted a garden in the East in Eden, and there he put the man he had formed. God made man and then put him in the environment that he created him to live in. In the Garden of Eden, Eden means 1 of the way 1 of the the definitions of Eden is delight. So, it could be said the Garden of Delight. In Isaiah, it talks about the garden of Eden.
It talks about the garden of Eden as the garden of the Lord, or the garden of God. In Genesis-3:8, it says, then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day. Now, that would imply that they knew what the sound of the Lord God walking in the cool of the garden in the cool of I mean, in the garden in the cool cool of the day was. They were used to it would imply that they were used to his manifested *presence*. Right?
Not only that, throughout Genesis-1, 2, and 3, we see that Adam and Eve knew the voice of God. They heard and understood and responded and conversed with the voice of God. They were placed in the Garden of Eden, which was the garden of God's manifested presence. It represented mankind's unbroken presence with God. The Garden of Eden was a place where "heaven touched earth".
It was a place where the spiritual touched the natural. It was a place where mankind was created to live in and live from. It was more than just a location. The Garden of Eden was an environment that mankind was supposed to live in and live from. You follow me?
Yes. Okay. Mankind is not just supposed to sit in a hammock and eat grapes in the Garden of Eden. *Galatians-2:15* says, The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden, the place of unbroken presence, the place where he was experienced, the manifested presence of God. And, before we get here, just let me some people would say, wait a second.
What's his presence? Omnipresent. God is all he's everywhere. Right? The the Bible says that that all things hold together.
He's in all things, and all things hold together in him. In him, we "live and move" and have our being. He God is everywhere, but he is not everything. God is not the tree. God is not the grass, but he holds the grass together because he's God.
You understand? There's some religions that that would teach that God is no. No. No. God's not those things.
We don't worship creature. We don't worship creation. We worship the creator, and the creator holds all those things together. And because he's omnipresent, he's in this room. Omnipresence.
But then, there's a manifested presence of God. A manifested presence of God is where God makes his presence known to his creation. His presence. He gives you a sense that He is there, and when He gives you a sense that He is there, He usually gives you a sense that He wants to do something. And, we know God, we know who he is by what he does.
That's why his names are Jehovah Jireh, our provider. We know him by what he does. You follow me so far? So, his presence gives us a sense or a pre sense of what that he's in the room with us and he what he wants to do, and what he does is his glory. His glory is the fruit flowing from him.
It is who he is and what he does on display for all to see. And, for that to happen, it happens through his presence. Does that make sense? You guys follow me? Okay.
Alright. *Genesis-2:15, the Lord God took man and put him in the Garden of Eden, the Garden of His Presence, the Garden of unbroken fellowship* with Him, where His manifested presence was, the place where mankind is supposed to live, and he put him there to work and to take care of it. He didn't put him there just to sit on a hammock and eat grapes. Are you lacking purpose in your life? You need to get in his presence because your purpose is found in his presence.
Getting in God's presence, you can hear his voice and he moves and begins to lead you as a father leads a son into his purpose for your life. Into understanding the nature that he put inside of you so that it can be displayed for the world to see and give him glory. The gifts, talents and abilities that he put in you, in every single 1 of you. You want purpose? Get in his presence.
And, your purpose, your work isn't just to be in the Garden of Eden. Okay? *Genesis-1:26*. Then God said, let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so they may rule over the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, over the livestock, all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground. So, he made us in his image, in his likeness, in order to be managers over creation, to give us dominion over creation.
God's in charge, but he gave us dominion. Right? We we are we are managers in order to cultivate and care for creation, in order to help creation to better reveal God's glory. That's why it says, creation is groaning with expectation for the "sons of God" to be revealed. Because as we step into a deeper understanding of who he says that we are, we are able to help the rest of creation to fulfill its purpose of displaying the glory of God.
Okay. Verse 27. So, God created mankind in his own image. In the image of God, he created them. Male and female, he created them.
In the image of God, he created them. Woman, you're created in God's image too. You are not less than a man. Yeah. You don't have anything to prove.
You are who God created you to be in partnership with man who's also created in God's image in order to reveal his image throughout the world. Cool. Man, don't hold something created in God's image just like yourself down. Serve her. Love her.
Speak the word of God over her, and empower her to be all God created her to be. Amen? Alright. There's my marriage stuff for today. God blessed them, verse 28, and said to them, "be fruitful" and increase in number, fill the earth and subdue it.
Interesting. So, we're supposed to multiply. Now, that's not that that is physically. Physically multiply and fill the earth with people, but we're supposed to multiply and fill the earth with His presence and His glory because we were managers of the earth, but also created to live in His presence. And, it says it's interesting.
It said, fill the earth and subdue it. Subdue means bring under control. So, God managed the Garden Of Eden as a place manicured with his manifested *presence*, but left the rest for man to do, and told him to multiply and make the rest of the world into the Garden of Eden. And, by doing that, you are filling the earth. The environment for you to live in is my presence.
My presence is filling the earth, and the glory of God is filling the earth. That was the commission God gave to mankind. You guys follow me? Alright. But, sin happened.
Satan deceived man and interrupted his purpose, caused impurity to happen. And, impurity in in the presence of purity hides from it or tries to kill it. Right? Say it again. Impurity in the presence of purity shamefully hides or tries to kill.
Okay? Adam and Eve hid from God's presence when they sinned. Amen? They were separated from God's presence because God is holy and because of sin. And, because of that, they were out of the unbroken environment that they were created to live in.
There were spurts of God's presence, but it wasn't an unbroken environment like they were created to live in, so they couldn't display the glory of God like they were created to display it. God needed to redeem them. So, now, you have history, the story of redemption. Alright? Then, *John-3:16*.
For God so loved the world that He gave His 1 and only Son, That whoever believes in him shall not perish, shall not be separated for *eternity* from God's presence, shall not live as they had been living in a state of broken relationship with the Father, but would be invited back into **eternal life*, shall not perish but have eternal life. What is eternal life? Jesus defined eternal life in John-17:3* as eternal life is knowing God. Wait a second. Jesus is the way, the truth, the life.
By believing the truth, it is the way into the life of God being reintroduced into man once again. See, Jesus didn't just die on the cross, just die on the cross to forgive you of your sin. He did that. But, he died on the cross and spilled his blood in order to clean the inside of you, in order to make you into a new creation, in order to redeem you. See, the Garden of Eden, a lot of theologians also say it was his sanctuary, God's sanctuary.
It was God's temple. It was the place where his *presence* rested. But, because of mankind, mankind were forbidden from entering back into the Garden of Eden because of sin. So, through Jesus, Jesus made a way, he washed us, he washed us clean and made us into a new creation where God's presence could now rest inside of us. He made us into his sanctuary.
He made us into his temple. He made us into the Garden of Eden. The place of unbroken presence with the heavenly Father. When you are born again, God comes to live inside of you so that you can hear his voice, you can know him, and walk with him day in and day out and never have to be out of his presence again just as it was in the Garden Of Eden. How cool is that?
That's awesome. You don't have to clap, but man. Okay. But, he didn't just stop there, and this is where a lot of church people stop. They're born again, they have his presence in them, and they just sit in the Garden of Eden.
Eating grapes and sitting in hammocks lazily. Or, they believe the deceiver that they're not in unbroken fellowship, that the blood of Jesus wasn't good enough, they have to add to it, that when they mess up, now the fellowship is broken again. They believe the deceiver, and they forget about the unbroken fellowship that they have with God. And, they place themselves, instead of in unbroken fellowship, they place place themselves under a cage like a bird. They're a bird, but they can't fly like they were created to fly because they believe a lie.
Don't believe a lie. You're the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. You're loved and created to fly. He cares for you. Jesus died to return you into unbroken fellowship with him and rose again to put his life inside of you.
But then he commissioned them. *Matthew-28*. He commissioned them just like he did in Genesis to fill the earth with his glory. Go into all the nations, making disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. And behold, I am with you always.
He's with us because he's in us. But, he commissioned us to take his presence everywhere that we go and transform the environment around us into places of his presence. You guys follow me? Told you we're going go a little bit deep here. So, how does He do that?
Can I invite the band to come back up here? The Holy Spirit is how the *Father* through the Son manifest His presence on the earth. How does the Holy Spirit manifest His presence on the earth? Using his people because he always wants to use the image of himself in order his body, the body of Christ, in order to reveal his glory through the world. Yeah?
So, how does he do that? I'm gonna give you 2 ways. Okay? First first, we'll start with this. *Psalms-22:3*.
It says, yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. Okay. Just keep that up there. I want you to know the Holy Spirit can manifest His presence however He wants. He's a big boy.
He's God. Amen. There's no formula. Okay? There's relationship.
That's what it is. There's no formula. There's a relationship. He can manifest His presence however He wants. However, thankfully, God gave us the Bible.
The Bible shows the principles of His nature and shows us how He wants to live and act in us and through us in the world. And, we see in the Bible, yet, you are holy. Praise the Lord. He's holy and pure, which if he lives in you, that means you're holy and pure because Jesus made you that way. It takes faith to believe that.
But it says, enthroned upon the praises of Israel. Now we, if you've been born again, you are a child of Abraham. By faith, you are his people. K? You are the, by faith, Israel.
So enthroned upon the praises of his people. Now what does enthroned mean? Placed on a throne. When someone's placed on a throne, is there presence there? Yeah.
Yeah? When you praise God, when you praise him, you are declaring that he is higher than you. You're declaring that he is Lord over you. And when you bring the sacrifice of praise, despite your circumstance, you're declaring that your circumstance is not what is in control or in charge, but you're declaring that He is Lord over your circumstance. So you're declaring the truth that of who He is.
The another word another version of that says, yet you are you inhabit the praises of your people. Same thing. He's in the midst of the praises of his people. Another version says, you dwell in the praises of your people or of Israel. Meaning, praise is a magnet for his presence.
Bring the sacrifice of praise. Does that mean just singing? No. But singing is a big part of it. Man, I can praise him by the way that I treat my wife.
I can praise him by the way I work with all of my might as unto the Lord. I can praise him by the way that I'm generous. I can praise him by the way that I serve. I can praise him by the way that I father my children. I can praise him by my persistence consistency in my character.
I can praise him by the way that I live. And I praise him with my mouth declaring it by faith no matter how I feel. Declaring that he is the Lord over all. Like Courtney said before, it's not an act. It's from the heart.
Declaring from the heart that he's Lord over all. God doesn't look at the way that you act, he looks at your heart and what's shining through through your mouth. Some people may have wondered why I'm so passionate about Christ. It's because I don't care what you Some people some people are like, why is he jumping over there? Because I'm praising my Lord.
I'm not jumping to make you say something. I'm jumping because, man, I'm excited about what he's done in my life. And man, sometimes, by the way, sometimes, and I do this at home when nobody's watching, I'm telling you as your pastor to disciple you to do the same thing. When life is tough and all I can see is the hardness, and all I can see is the pain, my Immediately, I have a reflex that says, man, God, you're amazing. Father, I thank you for who you are.
Lord God, I thank you that you're in the midst of this circumstance. I'm lifting you up because you're awesome and you're wonderful. I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus, not because of me, but because of you. So I can live out everything that you say because I am who you say I am, and you are who you say you are. And I begin to worship him and praise him with all my heart when ain't nobody looking.
That's Christianity. This is just an overflow of that guys. Amen? Amen. That's 1 way.
He wants to change the environment around you through praise, but also you're supposed to multiply. You're supposed to multiply. Is baby jumping in there? Yeah. She she's sensing Jesus like John the Baptist.
You're supposed to multiply. And when you're born again, you have the Holy Spirit in you. In you. A seal of the Holy Spirit welling up to eternal life to knowing God personally. But you know what today is?
What day is it? It's May 23. It's Pentecost. Today's Pentecost, guys. 40 days after Easter.
It's when the Holy Spirit, the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out. In John-1, John the Baptist said, I baptize in water, but there's come a woman that's greater than me who will "baptize in the Holy Spirit". *Acts-1:8* says, you will receive power when the Holy Spirit falls on you, and you will be my witnesses. When Jesus commissioned them, he said, wait until I give you the gift of the Holy Spirit. What is baptized in the Holy Spirit?
You're immersed in his presence. You're immersed in his love and in his power so that what's in you can come out of you and impact the world around you in power. The power to be a witness, the power to multiply. Amen? So there's a lot of people who were born again.
In Acts, it talks about those who there was a a teacher. Oh, what was his name? Who was the teacher in first Corinthians? Paul, but Paul in help me out. Where's my bible?
Oh, there it is. Give me a second. I wasn't supposed to tell you I wasn't gonna tell you this this you guys this 1. Now I am. No.
Bear with me, please. Thank you for your your patience. Ah, here it is. Apollos. You guys remember Apollos?
Meanwhile, a Jew named Apollos of native of Alexandria came to Ephesus. He was a learned man with a thorough knowledge of the scripture. This is Acts-18:25. He had been instructed in the "way of the Lord", and he spoke with great fervor, and he taught about Jesus accurately. You know, there's whole denominations of people that are apostles that teach about Jesus accurately, and it's awesome, and they are brothers and sisters in Christ.
It's wonderful. But then in the next clause, says, though he only knew the baptism of John, which was the baptism of repentance, which is when you're born again, you come to know him, and you're like you, you have a relationship with him, but you, it's just not as effective. Watch what happens. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home, and they explained to him the "way of God" more adequately. Watch this.
*Acts-19:1*. When Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. Where Priscilla and Aquila explained the way of God to Apollos more accurately was in Ephesus. Apollos had been discipling people in the way of the baptism of repentance. Paul gets to Ephesus.
He found some disciples and asked them, did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed? They said, no. We ain't even heard of a Holy Spirit. You know why? Because Apollos didn't teach them about it.
He was teaching about repentance, which is great. He's a brother in Christ. But remember Priscilla and Aquila, they explained the way of God to him more adequately. There is a more adequate way in order to multiply, and it's through the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Guess what Paul did?
Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed? No. We haven't even heard about it. So Paul asked them, what baptism did you receive? John's baptism.
What apostles was teaching? Paul said, John's baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the 1 coming after him, that is in Jesus. On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul placed his hands on them, they the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied, and there were 12 men in all.
Wow. It's awesome. Amen. So cool. So the second way, praise, but also is to be baptized in the Holy Spirit so that you have the power to take what's in you, spread it to the world around you.
So that when you walk in a room and you share the love of God that what what the change that he's done in you, it comes out in love and power and changes the atmosphere of their heart, impacts the atmosphere of their heart and power and changes the atmosphere of the room. When you guys come here today, you come here, praise the Lord. A lot of people sense his manifested presence. But then sometimes somebody prays for you. Sometimes somebody ministers you and what they say hits and all of a sudden they're crying.
You know why? It's not because they just happen to say the right thing. It's because it was the power of the Holy Spirit working in them. But it's not just for the few holy people, it's for all people. Anyone who would receive it.
So it's not us, it's the Holy Spirit who doesn't? It's the Holy Spirit. I wanna invite you to stand. What do you gotta do? You gotta tarry all night?
Nope. *Luke-11:13* says, if the father, who's a good father and if if you were taught that, I I don't wanna offend you by saying that. I just something. Okay? I want to point out that Luke-11:13 says, the Father who gives good gifts to his children.
I mean, if if you being evil give good gifts to your children, how much does the heaven more does the heavenly Father who is good give the Holy Spirit to those who asks? So what it takes is asking. That's it. Oh my gosh. My eyes are open to a more more adequate way.
I believe, Holy Spirit, would you come and baptize me in your presence so I have the power to be a witness? Heavenly Father,
baptize me in the Holy Spirit.
I ask you. That's all it takes is asking. It's pretty awesome. Praise the Lord. We're gonna sing.
If you as I'm talking about baptism of Holy Spirit, if you've never been baptized in the Holy Spirit and something in you wants to be baptized in Holy Spirit, would you come forward? Come on. Seriously, who's first? Who's gonna be bold and say, that's for me. I wanna be baptized in Holy Spirit.
Come on. There's a lot. Come on. Praise the Lord. You're the first of many.
There's another. Praise the Lord. Come on. We wanna pray for you. We wanna pray for you.
There's 2. There's more. Come on. Praise the Lord. Come on.
There's another. Come on. If you've been sharing Jesus with people or had the desire to share Jesus and never had enough boldness, you probably need to be baptized in the Holy Spirit. It's it's not I'm not looking down at you. I'm just encouraging you to take the next step in that.
Anybody else? There's more. I'd love to pray for you. All throughout Acts, you see them laying hands on people. It doesn't have to happen that way.
Some people just receive it while they're preaching, and that's awesome. But all throughout Acts, you see them laying hands on people. So I'm a lay hands on them and pray for them as we're worshiping and praising God. And it's gonna be awesome and wonderful. There's also people in here that have never entered into they've never been redeemed.
They never entered into that relationship with God where they have a a relationship with God. They're born again, and you know you need Jesus. If that's you, as we sing this song, I want you to come forward. You know what? Is is there anybody right now that would be bold enough to say, "I need Jesus".
I know I need Jesus. I I wanna give my life to him. Would you come forward right now? Anybody say bold boldly. I don't care what people think.
I'm just gonna do it. Come on. The Bible says compel them to come in, which means pressure. You know why? Because I want you to go to hell.
I don't want you to be separated from him for eternity. I want you to come in, and I want you to receive life. I will not compel you ever pressure you to give, but I will compel you to come into the kingdom. If you've received, We'll pray for you, and man, you know, the the believers were in 1 place praying praying for for people, and the Holy Spirit fell on them, and and they spoke the word of God boldly. I have to believe that that was a lot of people that had already received the baptism of Holy Spirit.
So yeah, absolutely. If I don't quote scripture, doubt me. Okay? I'm gonna pray. I wanna encourage you guys as we worship.
I want you to praise and know that he's here. But see, when his presence is manifested in a place as you heard, he wants to show you who he is by doing what He does. He wants to reveal His glory. So as you praise Him, you might sense His presence. And as you sense His presence, you might have an idea about going to pray for somebody.
Or that you do need to come pray, or maybe you need healing in your body, or maybe you need something like, hey, come forward. We want to pray. Bible says, lay hands on the sick and they shall recover. Call the elders of the church to do so, or do it with 1 another. Maybe maybe you have a a need in your life that you've been believing for, and and you just want to pray.
Maybe, I don't know what the Holy Spirit or God's gonna do. I have no idea. But he will show you as you praise in his presence. He wants his glory to be made known, so he's gonna show you what he wants you to do, or he what he wants to do in you, and through you. And then, as you're obedient, you are now a conduit of him glorifying God in obedience, and saying yes to to the Lord.
